Surge Africa’s Impact Media Work
Through Strategic and Impact Media, Surge Africa develops and scales strategic communication initiatives aimed at advancing climate narratives, improving access to climate data and information, and placing voices and works of people from the global south at the forefront of climate action.
Role Overview:
As the Strategic Media Program Officer, you will be responsible for developing and managing projects, initiatives and campaigns under the workstream. You will be an ardent program manager, communicator, storyteller and movement weaver. You will work with local and international allies to scale our program, and launch innovative and time bound initiatives that seek to advance the program.
Responsibilities:
Lead, manage and scale Surge Africa’s Impact Media Program including projects, campaigns and other initiatives under the workstream.
Develop new programs to support the strategic direction of the organisation, and manage existing programs, projects and initiatives as it relates to the strategic media workstream.
Formulate, organise and monitor inter-connected projects, and coordinate related activities within the organisation
Track progress of the program, develop reports and evaluation assessments, manage budgets and track expenses as it relates to the strategic media workstream
Build and manage relationships with climate justice movements and organisations working at the intersection of climate and media, scale the reach of our programs across board, and bring in new partners to the fold of our work
Develop program strategy and operational plan for the project, and ensure operational strategy aligns with organisational goals
Coordinate the development of toolkits, training materials, and other documents as needed.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years demonstrable experience developing and managing strategic communications initiatives and programs deeply rooted in media and communications to drive strategic change at both policy and community/movement level
A good understanding of politics around capitalism, neocolonial ideologies, and historical facts around extractivism and climate justice.
A remarkable knowledge of how movement/networks organise themselves and function both in Africa and internationally
A strong working knowledge of project management, program design and advocacy campaigns Ability to transform rough ideas and general concepts into actions, projects, and completed products or messages.
Proven track record of engaging in movements and network, and building and sustaining relationships with organisations and climate justice networks within Africa and beyond.
Ability to anticipate climate trends using both research and own insight, and brings the project into the fore of that trajectory.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
